About This Event

High Entropy Ceramics Abstract: High-entropy ceramics (HECs) have emerged as a promising class of materials for extreme environment applications owing to their exceptional thermal stability, mechanical properties, and compositional versatility. However, the fundamental relationships among chemical complexity, thermodynamic stability, electronic structure, and mechanical response remain poorly understood, limiting the predictive design of these materials. In this talk, I will present an integrated computational and experimental approach to establish fundamental design principles for refractory high-entropy carbides and diborides, with particular emphasis on the roles of configurational entropy, defect landscapes, and bonding in governing phase stability and mechanical properties. Speaker Bio: Dr. Delower Hossain is an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) department at the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI). He completed his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering in 2021 from Penn State University (PSU). After graduation, Dr. Hossain worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and later as a staff materials scientist at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). At UTSI, his research group utilizes physical vapor deposition (PVD) processes to develop functional ceramics for extreme engineering applications.
