About This Event

When students can turn to AI for help with everything from brainstorming to completing an assignment, it raises an important question: How much help is too much? The answer may depend less on the AI tool itself and more on what we want students to learn. How Much Help Is Too Much? Finding AI’s Place in Teaching and Learning explores how instructors can make intentional decisions about AI’s role in the learning process while helping students understand what is expected of them. Through examples and perspectives from instructors and teaching and learning experts, we’ll consider how AI can support learning objectives without replacing the critical thinking, participation, practice, and productive struggle that help students learn. We’ll also discuss the importance of transparency and clear communication, including how instructors can establish expectations around AI use and help students understand when, how, and why it may be appropriate in their coursework. Rather than starting with whether AI should or shouldn’t be used, we’ll focus on the learning we want to happen and work backward from there. Where could AI meaningfully support that learning? Where might it interfere? And how can instructors communicate those distinctions so students understand both the expectations and the reasoning behind them? Whether you’re experimenting with AI in your courses, concerned about how students are already using it, or still deciding what role it should play, you’ll leave with ideas for making intentional decisions about AI in your teaching and communicating those decisions clearly to students.
