About This Event

Will Magrogan, Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Colorado Boulder Opinion and Culture Evolution in Higher Dimensions Voter models were first proposed in 1975 by Holley and Ligget as a framework for understanding how consensus is reached in a network of interacting single-opinion voters. The model can be extended to allow opinions on multiple issues and addition nuace in opinions. More nuanced opinions allows correlations in interactions between them and in how opinion update. A tractable implementation of these rules, similar to the Axelrod model of cultural diffusion (introduced in 1997) parameterizes these update rules as update probabilities. In this way, we will examine the dynamics and asymptotics of a two dimensional binary opinion space and anazlye the system kinetics as it evolves towards either polarization, or consensus. These results offer insight into different regimes of opinion formation and tools to analyze real-world voter data.
